How To Cleanse your Crystals – Ultimate Guide

how to cleanse your crystals

You clean your home, yourself, and your car… but did you know your crystals need regular cleansing, too? They probably don’t look dirty in the traditional sense, but crystals absorb energy (both positive and negative), and should be cleansed regularly in order to maintain their ability to heal.

Why do I need to cleanse my crystals?

Because crystals act as an energy filter, with the ability to hold onto negative energy, it’s important to cleanse the stones to increase their vibrancy and effectiveness. When a stone is properly cleared, it should feel both energetically and physically light.

How often should I cleanse my crystals?

You shouldn’t rely solely on a calendar when it comes to cleansing your crystals. Frequency of use, care, and energy all play a role in how often you should cleanse your crystals. Some may need cleansing every two weeks, while others may react well to cleansing a few times a year.

A good rule of thumb: if individual stones begin to look dull, appear sticky or greasy, or feel heavier than normal, it’s a good sign that it’s time to cleanse your crystals. Be intuitive to your stones and let them guide the process.

8 ways to clean your crystals

Cleanse your crystals under the moonlight

If you’ve owned crystals for a while, cleansing your crystals under a full moon is probably a method you’re familiar with already.

A full moon is the spiritual and energetic pinnacle of every month. While that may play a part in your spiritual practices, don’t forget to introduce your crystals into the mix, too! Check the weather report to ensure there’s no forecasted rain or humidity, then at sunset, place your crystals in a safe spot where they’ll be touched by the moon’s glow. For an extra boost of energy, leave the crystals out until midday so they can soak up the sun, too!

Cleanse under running water

Running water is a natural phenomenon that promotes a feeling of calm. Think of a babbling brook, a rushing stream, or the lapping of waves on the beach. Even meditating on those sounds brings peace, doesn’t it?

If you live near a natural running water source, bring your stones for a peaceful bath from Mother Earth. Be sure to submerge the stones completely and pat them dry after cleansing. No running water near you? No problem! A faucet in your home will work, too!

Be sure to do your research before cleansing a crystal under water as some crystals aren’t H2O compatible.

Get salty

Continuing with the aquatic theme, salt water is another strategy for cleansing your crystals. If you have access to sea water, use that! If not, place the crystal in a glass bowl and mix water with sea salt (or even table salt in a pinch) until it’s fully covered. Depending on the energetic weightiness of the crystal in question, leave it submerged for one day up to one week. Afterwards, run under clean water to remove excess salt, pat the crystal dry, and dispose of the salt water (now full of the expelled negative energy).

Just as above, be sure your stone is able to withstand a salt bath. For instance, halite will dissolve in salt water… and making a crystal disappear isn’t a recommended strategy for enhancing its energy!

Rice: it’s not just for waterlogged phones

In Chinese culture, rice is the link between Heaven and Earth. It’s so important that their word for energy, ch’i, includes the character for rice. Because of the important, life-giving qualities of rice, it has the ability to draw out the negative energies from crystals.

To cleanse your stones using this method, you can place the stones on a bed of rice overnight. For extra healing, leave it on a windowsill to be charged by moonlight.

Alternatively, you can completely bury the stone, allowing the rice to draw out the negative energy from all sides of the stone.

After this process is complete, be sure to dispose of the rice.

When in doubt, smudge it out!

Have you ever used sage to smudge out the negative energy left behind in your home after a big fight? You can use this same technique to draw out the negative energy trapped in your crystal, too.

Once your sage is lit, hold your crystal in the line of smoke for 30-60 seconds. Alternatively, you can place the crystal on a surface and use a feather or your hand to waft the smoke around your stone until it’s fully enveloped.

I like big rocks and I cannot lie

Did you know that some crystals have the ability to cleanse other crystals? In particular, selenite, citrine, carnelian, and quartz clusters have high vibrations and are able to cleanse other stones within their proximity. To take advantage of these healing stones, include one in a bag or box with your gemstones in need of cleansing, or place smaller crystals on top of the larger stones.

Get dirty to get clean: bury your crystals

When the going gets tough, the tough call their mama! When a stone is weighted down by negative energy, sometimes the only cure is a visit with Mother Earth. Choose a spot you’ll remember and bury the stone in need of healing and rejuvenation. Mother Earth may provide overnight healing, but you should be prepared that crystals with an extremely heavy energy can take months or even years to regain its original vibrancy.

Use the power of your mind

Your mind is powerful… take full advantage of that power to clear your stones using the practice of visualization. This method gives you the ability to take a hands-on approach to clearing your crystals. Take each stone in need of cleansing in your hand individually, and visualize a bright, white, cleansing light chasing away any negative energy in the stone. When using this method, be sure to take time to rest and recharge in order to not deplete your energy.

When you use these eight methods to cleanse and care for your crystals, your crystals will be restored to their full capabilities, meaning a happier life full of healing for you!
